Innovation and Problem-Solving Contributions
on January 1st, 1863 President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves, and in 1865 June 19th, 250,000 Texas slaves we're told by the US Army that they were finally free. This was the last Slaves of the Civil War. Black Americans have been prolific inventors and innovators, creating numerous products that have addressed significant challenges and improved everyday life in America. Changing the title from African Americans to Black Americans, or American (Black) would not only acknowledge the substantial contributions of Black individuals throughout American history but also reflect a more inclusive and unifying identity for the community.
